Rape Crisis Center

Ok so Nov. 11th will be my first day of training for the rape crisis center. I'm a little anxious about it. I really feel passionate about working with people in these situations yet i feel like my passion and sensitivity to their pain they have gone through may effect me to the point where i will be hindered by it. It could cause me not to be able to do my job. What good am i to them if i cant do my job and help them cope.
There are two jobs that i can volunteer to do: hotline and/or hospital advocacy. I have chosen to be a hospital advocate only. As a person who is planning to be a psychologist i don't think that being a hotline operator is the best experience that i can take from this opportunity. i feel like as a psychologist i will have to see my patients face to face,  i will have to not only read their words but body language too. Also there only so much you can do for someone over the phone. Sometime people just need a big hug.
Only a few days after i first inquired about volunteering with the rape crisis center i was introduced to the movie/documentary "Call and Response." I was in Jeff Mooney hardcore old testament class CST110 (don't laugh, i know its a 100 level class but he is very serious about us actually reading through most of the OT) when i was introduced. Like i said he is a very hardcore man. For those of you who know him, you know that he is also very dedicated to ending the sex slave trade. So in class one day he shares this preview of a movie called "call and response." I was very interested in seeing the movie. Now im not going to lie, i was getting credit for it but the main reason i was going was to support the cause. All the proceeds of the tickets sold went to the helping the children in the sex slave trade. The movie was actually more of a benefit concert in the theaters. There were artists from Moby to Natasha Bedingfield. I believe that Justin Dillion was the one who started it. He, as a musicians could no longer stand back and let these little child be taken advantage of. Justin's response was to put together  this concert for the cause but he knew that if would be really hard to get everyone together so he decided to film it. And that's basically what the film is, they also have some clips of the reality of the cause. They show some of the brothels where children as young as five were being prostituted. It really horrible! The reason that the children are getting younger is because clients want some form of security that the "workers" are not HIV positive and the younger they are the more likely to be virgins. YES virgin!!! These people go to villages and trick the parents of these young girls to make them believe that they will be sent to a go school and be given a good job. The parents are in poverty and want the best for their children even if its them who isn't able to give it to them. It would sound like a great opportunity that any parent who just be stupid not to take. So they take it and most often never hear from their children ever again. The children are gang raped as a way of "breaking them in" And after they are raped their stuff is sown back up so they look like virgins and also so they bleeding like virgins. They are put to work only a few hours after this process.  UGH! it really hurts my heart to here these things. I cant sit back and do nothing this. I have to RESPOND!
